This piece was composed between 1963 and 1964. It is one of the three works I created when I was still a student at the National Taiwan Academy of the Arts. formerly the National Taiwan University of the Arts. , and also the most significant one among the three. The Violin Sonata was an attempt I made upon my graduation, when I decided to abandon the functional harmony of the western traditional major-minor system, in order to explore a personal musical language. The piece comprises three movements, like a sonata in the classical period. The idea of constructing its harmonic vocabulary comes from the traditional tuning of the pipa. First Movement. Introduction -- Allegretto with four stages of opening, elucidating, developing and concluding. Second Movement. Intoning Poem. Adagio. Third Movement. Rondo. Allegro.
