They can grow as wide as 23 feet, which is twice as wide as they are long. They have triangular horn-shaped fins, and their mouths are shaped like a large, forward-facing rectangle which is used to suck in food that their fins propel into their path as they swim. Manta Rays eat 13% of their body weight in zooplankton each week. Manta Rays live either close to the coast, or they can be found roaming the open seas. Their skin is a deep black or dark color with pale markings near the front fins. "Manta" comes from an old Spanish word meaning "coat" or "blanket" because in the old days fishermen would trap them by throwing coats or blankets over them. Manta Rays are being affected by pollution and commercial fishing nets. They may soon be placed upon the endangered species list. Manta Rays cannot swim backwards, so when they become entangled in the fishing nets, they tend to flip over violently and get further entangled and drown.
