Reginald Heber's hymn Holy, Holy, Holy is representative of the English Oxford revival, a movement that encouraged rich language in both poetry and music. The text is historically aligned with John B. Dyke's tune Nicea, a tune that English hymnologist J. R. Watson suggests carries the poem's long lines effortlessly with magnificent grandeur.

This setting seeks to communicate both the mystery and grandeur of God's holiness, being at times distant, and at other times rich and majestic. An overall warmth of sound is desired, to communicate that while God is transcendent, He is also immanent.
