Misc. Notes 'Hope', the first tune in the book, is said to have also been known in the Black Country as 'Strike Tune', as it was used by local miners on strike in 1874 as their 'freedom hymn'.

First published by Nicholds during or after his 4-year stay in the ironworks of the Welsh Valleys (c.1848-c.1852), most of the tunes are named after places in Monmouthshire.
